Who was Sullivan Ballou?
Sullivan was an American lawyer and politician. He served as officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, where he was killed in the first battle of Bull Run. He is famous for the letter he sent to his wife the day before the battle from which he never returned.

What happened at Bull Run on July 16, 1861?
On July 16, 1861, the Union army and confederate army clashed for the first time in the Civil war in a big battle. The Federal army under Gen. McDowell was eventually defeated by Gen Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

What is the Battle of Antietam?
On September 27, 1862, near Antietam Creek the Union and Confederate Armies clashed in one of the bloodiest single days of the Civil War, with more than 22,000 casualties. Even if not a complete victory for the Federals, it managed to stop Confederate troop in their advance towards Maryland.

Who was Frederick Douglass?
Frederick Douglass was a former slave and eminent leader in the abolition movement. he has also been the first black person in American History to hold a high position in the U.S. government. He was also nominated, without his knowledge, as vice-president during the campaigned run by Victoria Woodhull.
He died in 1895 after attending a congress in Washington D.C. held by the Nation Council of Women.
Between his positions, he was during different times U.S. ambassador in the Dominican Republic and in Haiti.

What is the Emancipation Proclamation?
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
Even if it didn't formally ended the slavery in all the United States, it is a major document in the civil right movement and a big step towards the end of slavery.

Who was Ulysses S. Grant?
Ulysses S. Grant was a Union general during the civil war and one of the men that lead the United States to the victory against the Confederate States. It was later elected after the war as 18th president of the United States in 1869

Who was Robert Lee?
Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870) was a former Confederate general during the Civil War and one the best strategists in all America at that  time. Even so, he lost major big battles that later enabled the Union to win the war. Later, he became the president of the Washington College in Virginia (now known as Washington and Lee College). He died in Virginia in 1870.

Who was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain?
Joshua L. Chamberlain (1828 - 1914) was a former College professor who decided to volunteer for the Union army the Civil War. Even if without any experience, he became well known and later he also received the Medal of Honor for his value during the Gettysburg Battle. He also had the honor to command the Union troops in the surrender ceremony over Lee's troops. He was also the 31rd Maine governor.
